We have believed in closeness for many years. As early as 1973, we launched our first baby carrier. It was designed to carry baby heart-to-heart to provide optimal closeness between baby and parent from birth. Today, the Baby Carrier Original is a treasured classic the world over. At the age of 4 to 6 months, when your baby’s back and neck muscles are sufficiently developed to hold their head up, you can start to carry your baby facing forward for brief periods. Most babies are thrilled to observe their surroundings with their back nestling safely against Mom or Dad. It’s a safe way to experience two worlds at the same time.

But psychological research only began talking about closeness in the 1950s. It took until 1970 for medical experts to establish how important eye contact and physical closeness between baby and parent is – especially during a baby’s first six months.
In the 1960s, Björn Jakobson had founded the BabyBjörn AB company and developed the baby bouncer. He was inspired by this new research on the importance of closeness, and his response was to begin developing a baby carrier in collaboration with pediatricians. A baby carrier would maximize closeness – promoting the bond between parents and their newborn baby – while functioning as a practical everyday aid. The birth of Bjorn’s and Lillemor’s fourth child gave them plenty of opportunities to test the baby carrier in the peace and quiet of their own home and add the all-important finishing touches.

It seemed fitting to give the new baby carrier the name Hjärtenära (“Close to heart”) when it was launched in 1973. The baby should be carried close enough to kiss – high up on the parent’s chest – and heart to heart.
At the beginning of the 1970s, it was almost unthinkable for men to carry their children, but research showed that parents who form an emotional bond with their children through physical closeness early on have better contact with them later on in life as well. So the baby carriers were designed to appeal to both moms and dads.
BABYBJÖRN has always addressed both parents in advertisements and on packaging.
The entirely new Original
As the 1990s approached, BabyBjorn developed a new baby carrier design that would be even more simple and comfortable to wear. The launch of the new Baby Carrier Original in 1991 signaled an important step in baby carrier development. Because all the buckles were now on the front of the baby carrier, it was easy to put on and take off without help. The new two-part design was completely unique and made it possible to transfer a sleeping child to the crib without waking them. Baby Carrier Original was intended for use just by newborns, but a smart adjustment buckle allowed the baby carrier to grow with the baby and this extended the amount of time it could be used. Another important innovation was the option of carrying the slightly older baby facing forward.
Baby Carrier Original was the first baby carrier with the parallel lines on the front – a feature on all BABYBJÖRN Baby Carriers. Seen here is a nautical design typical of the 90s.
The black color scheme was introduced after the fashion magazine Harper’s Bazaar was flooded with calls from readers wondering where they could buy the black baby carrier it showed. The Baby Carrier Original in the magazine was actually navy blue, but the picture was in black-and-white. Since then, the black baby carriers have been by far the most popular.
The black Baby Carrier Original was soon popular among celebrities, and BABYBJÖRN began to be seen in slightly more fashionable contexts.

It is the basic design in our baby carrier range, where all of the designs are based on Björn Jakobson’s idea from 1973 – a parent and a baby experiencing complete closeness to each other during the first important months of the baby’s life.
