Child-safe design

The unique two-stage lock prevents any child from releasing the BABYBJÖRN Booster Chair when it is strapped to the chair.

How do I use the BABYBJÖRN Booster Chair?
1. Release the booster chair attachment system by pressing the two-stage lock (a black knob on the back of the booster chair). The attachment strap is now unlocked and you can feed it out to the required length.
2. Place the BABYBJÖRN Booster Chair on an appropriate* chair and secure the attachment system by fastening the clasp and then pressing-and-twisting the black knob to tighten the straps.
3. Make sure that the straps are properly tightened – they should not hang loose under the chair. Always check that the booster chair is firmly and securely fastened on the chair before letting a child sit on it.

Background – why a booster chair?
“I’m big now and can sit by myself – a high chair is for babies!”
Around the age of three a child generally wants to feel grown-up and imitate mum and dad – especially when it comes to mealtimes. A booster chair is the perfect solution and frees up the high chair for younger siblings. At BabyBjörn we know this all to well, therefore it was a logical step to set in motion the booster chair project.
What was important to bear in mind?
The task was to develop a safe and unique product that provided a correct sitting height for the child, but that was simple enough to use like a “telephone directory”. The keywords here being Safe and Easy.
We began by taking a look at the booster chair market and from there, designed a prototype in plastic. It was evaluated at nursery schools, by families and in collaboration with leading paediatricians. We analysed the shape of the prototype, how children used it and addressed all safety issues relating to its design.
Safe for children
Very early on in the project BabyBjörn product developers realised that for reasons of safety, some kind of strap for fastening the booster chair safely to a chair was needed. The team started to work on the “perfect” and “easy-to-use” strap – a major challenge as it turned out. Another complication the team was faced with was the design of the booster chair itself. Different solutions were tried over and over again.
An external test institute also tested, for example, whether the booster chair could be dropped without being damaged and how well it could withstand different weights. As in all BABYBJÖRN product development projects, we also reviewed product-related industry standards.
As children are curious by nature and love to examine anything and everything, we developed a unique two-stage lock, which prevents other children, for example siblings, from releasing the booster chair when it is strapped to a chair. And to make sure the child couldn’t slide off the booster chair we designed the seat with a ribbed surface.
Our solution
We know for a fact, through our work with leading paediatricians and studies of children sitting, that small children have a natural upright position and accordingly do not need a backrest. Adding a backrest to the booster chair would make it cumbersome as well as unstable, thus defeating the whole idea of a compact and light product with a practical handle – all of which make it easy to carry and to put away. Something the parents in our tests placed a high value on. Their dining room was no longer cluttered thanks to the BABYBJÖRN Booster Chair and support chair simply being placed under the dining room table when not in use.
What parents and children say
A big plus, and much appreciated, was that parents could take the booster chair with them to restaurants or when visiting friends or relatives. And a positive and somewhat surprising discovery when carrying out user tests was that the children became attached to the booster chair. It became “their chair” when watching TV on the sofa or on the floor.
